Katanga, Unity Hall injunction application dismissed

A Kumasi High court has thrown out an injunction application seeking to prevent authorities of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from converting University hall and Unity hall to unisex halls.

The court explained that residence has already been granted to female students and seeking to prevent same would interrupt the activities of the school.

Joy News’ Kwesi Debrah reported that there was heavy security presence at the court Friday morning.

The injunction applications were filed differently by the now former two all-male halls but the court ordered that the applications be consolidated.

Kwesi Debrah added that after lawyers had made their argument, the presiding judge ruled that the female students who have been alloted roms in the two halls are already there so reversing same would be inimical to school activities.

The action comes after school authorities in January, 2018 revealed plans to convert Unity Hall and University Hall, popularly known as Katanga into mixed halls.

The university authorities argue that they want to assign female students to the halls in order to to accommodate its increasing number of female students.

The authorities also seek to curb violent clashes between the two former all-male halls which has been a result of a long standing rivalry between them.

Protests

On August 10, residents of the two halls embarked on a demonstration in the capital, Accra to register their disagreement to the university's actions. They argue that the single sex has become a brand and tradition for them.
